Kelly Wong, an immigrant rights advocate, has become the first noncitizen appointed to the San Francisco Elections Commission. Wong, who immigrated from Hong Kong in 2019 for graduate studies, hopes her appointment inspires other immigrants in the city. Her role was made possible by a 2020 measure that removed the citizenship requirement for serving on San Francisco boards and commissions. The Board of Supervisors unanimously appointed Wong.
