“A new piece of legislation introduced by a Democrat in Connecticut would amend the state’s constitution to allow non-citizens, including illegal immigrants, to vote in municipal and state elections.”
(From the January 25, 2023 Townhall article, “Connecticut Lawmaker Proposes Bill to Allow Illegal Immigrants to Vote”)
A new bill introduced by Connecticut Democrat Rep. Juan Candelaria proposes amending the state constitution to allow non-citizens, including illegal immigrants, to vote in municipal and state elections. Candelaria aims to spark a debate on the issue, asserting that undocumented individuals are integral to the community. Republican House leader Rep. Vincent Candelora criticized the bill as eroding national and state sovereignty, arguing it should not progress to a public hearing.
Connecticut is home to over 240,000 non-citizen immigrants. The proposal follows a recent Vermont Supreme Court ruling that permitted non-citizens to vote in Montpelier’s local elections, deeming it constitutional. Montpelier’s initiative arose from local concerns about fairness for tax-paying non-citizens.
Additionally, Massachusetts voters recently upheld a state law allowing illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses, requiring them to present a foreign passport or consular ID at the Registry of Motor Vehicles. This decision followed a successful ballot initiative to prevent the law’s repeal.
